From Skinny Girl Cocktails to "mom's sippy cup" it is likely you have noticed the memes, magnets, and other ways society has feminized drinking.

Prior to COVID-19 the rates of drinking for women had been on the rise for several decades and a recent study found that "high-risk drinking rose about 58 percent among women (from 2002 to 2013) and, more frighteningly, alcohol and dependence increased by 83.7 percent among women during the same time period."

...Read moreality, targeted marketing toward women by the alcohol industry are just a few of the influences that have led to increased rates of alcohol use. "According to a RAND Corporation study, during the pandemic women have increased their heavy drinking days by 41% compared to before the pandemic. Additional research has shown that the psychological stress related to COVID-19 was associated with greater drinking for women, but not men."

During this session, we will explore a brief history of patterns of use among women, reasons why women use, especially during COVID-19, as well as the impact of societal expectations and gender-based marketing.
